What to Expect

“It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.”
-Sir Edmund Hillary

Your therapeutic journey is like no other!

It all depends on what’s bringing you to therapy.

Sudden life transitions such as a change in work or relationship may require a brief intervention or short-term therapy (a few sessions) to help get you back on track.

Long-term therapy is typically more appropriate for working through major stressors, learning how to use coping skills, healing from trauma, processing grief and loss, or changing dysfunctional patterns.

Therapy tailored to you and your needs.

Whether you seek therapy for the first time or are returning, your therapy is all about what you need. Regardless of what is bringing you to therapy, we start by exploring who you are and how you got here. In the beginning, you might be unclear what your goals are and where you want to start.

Your openness and willingness are where we begin.

We’ll explore your life patterns that aren’t working and what you would like to see change. You will experience a safe, nonjudgmental, and confidential environment to share your story and experiences that will inform your therapeutic process.

You may be ready to identify goals, what you want to work on and look to begin by processing your experiences. On the other hand, you may struggle to identify where to start.

Either way, we’ll create a clear path mapped with meaningful goals to support your journey.

Your therapy is a genuine reflection of your inner strength.

By choosing to engage in therapy, you show your tremendous inner strength. True strength is gentle, requires patience, and trust that hope is your greatest teacher. Your therapy is an opportunity to tap into your gentle strength, listen to your heart, and discover your authentic self.

Your inner strength has guided the experiences that have made you who you are and have brought you to this moment.

Therapy allows you to become your best self.

You possess the greatest knowledge and awareness of your experiences.

When you start to heal from pain, manage troublesome emotions, and stop negative thought patterns, you become increasingly curious about your healing potential. Outside of the session, you notice increased feelings of happiness as the body and mind respond to healing. The symptoms that initially brought you to therapy improve, your energy increases, you experience a restful sleep, and you feel more connected with each passing day.

As you feel the benefits and effects of therapy, you’ll want to go further. You become able to manage stress better, intentionally devote time to self-care, and improve your relationships. Most of all, the relationship you have with yourself takes on a new meaning. You find that piece that has been missing… YOU!

Therapy becomes the equipment you use to continue to climb – to set new goals and achieve new heights. You might have never thought how powerful just breathing and meditating could be. Hesitant at first, you agreed to try it. Your therapy has helped change this perspective, and today, you reserve time to meditate and value this time set aside just for you. Meditation has become the door to awareness of new goals to support your growth and renewed mindset.

What does therapy actually look like?

Getting started…

Your first session will look different from other sessions. You will share what is bringing you to therapy, goals you would like to work on, and important needs you may have to support your journey.

Whether you are getting started via remote Telehealth or in person at my office, expect to feel welcomed, safe, and comfortable. To support your comfort and help ease anxiety at the office, you will be greeted by Ness, a certified therapy dog who can’t wait to meet you! Ness is available throughout each of your therapy sessions to provide physical and emotional comfort and support. Ness loves being with people, getting pets, and witnessing your bravery. She will be with you every step of the way.

Regular sessions…

I find it most beneficial if you begin with scheduled weekly sessions. Having a scheduled time for therapy each week ensures optimal safety and support as we get started.

Expect to share about what is happening in your life, provide a history of any issues related to presenting concerns, and tell me how you apply skills learned in therapy to your life.

Each session after that will reflect your goals. For example, you may share your experience from a traumatic event, identify symptoms or triggers, or confront a problem you are facing in your life.

With each session, you’ll develop new insight, increased awareness, learn coping skills, and the ability to manage and regulate physical, emotional, and psychological stressors.

You’ll gain a fresh perspective, experience increased confidence, and cultivate a renewed mindset that supports your growth.

The more you put in, the more you take out.

The more you continue to show up, work hard, and commit to therapy, the greater the benefits to you outside of session.

Beyond our work together in session, I may recommend that you read books, use journaling exercises, meditate, or engage in activities that support your goals.

By making this brave decision to seek therapy, you are committing to an alternative way of living, open to new ideas and ways of thinking.

Your therapy is your opportunity to take responsibility for positive change to cultivate a life you love.
